From The North East and the Leeds/Sheffield Area

--------------------------

Either

Head straight down the A1 / A1M / M1 to junction 28, (but you can catch a lot of traffic round Leeds and Sheffield at the wrong time of day),

Or

Head down the A1/A1M then get on the old A1 down to the M18, turn right onto the M18, and then onto the M1 south to Nottingham, Derby etc for 22 miles to junction 28, (which can be an easier route now that the motorway by passes it)

(From Newcastle, either should take just over two hours)

Come off the M1 at junction 28, and get on the A38 towards Derby & Birmingham.

The Pretty Route

Follow the A38 for about 7 miles, then take the exit signposted A610 to Nottingham and Ripley, with a local signpost (white) to Ambergate.

At the roundabout, turn basically right. Take the A610 (A6) to Ambergate and Matlock, and follow the road for 3 miles to a 'T' junction.

Turn left onto the A6 towards Belper, Duffield and Derby.

Follow the A6 for 2.5 miles into Belper, and just as you get there, go past an old factory on the right (called East Mill), and turn right at the traffic lights onto the A517 to Ashbourne.

Go under the factory bridge, over the river, take a sharp left, and up the hill.

At the top of the hill, the road does a long sweeping left hand bend, and at the end of that bend, (0.8 miles from the traffic lights) there is a very minor crossroads on a right hand bend.

Take the left turn into Farnah Green, signposted to Hazelwood and Farnah Green, and immediately stay right where a road goes off to the left.

Stay on this road for 1 mile, past the Bluebell Inn, to the top of the hill, and then take a right onto Goodwins Lane, signposted to Hazelwood.

Straight over the crossroads into Hob Hill (leading to Nether Lane). Down the hill, past a company called Lubrizol on the right, and we are the next house on the right (0.8 miles from the crossroads), set back from the road with a gravel drive with an old street light by the gate. (Just past the gate there are small green "Knowle Farm" and "Duck Pond View" signs.)

The Main Road Route

Follow the A38 for about 16 miles.

As you approach Derby, you come down a long gentle hill to a roundabout. The left hand turn goes to Derby centre and Nottingham, and the right fork remains the A38. Stay with the A38.

Very shortly, come off the A38 and turn right onto the A6 to Matlock and Duffield.

In a couple of miles you come to Duffield, and half a mile after the Duffield sign there is a set of traffic lights with a left turn, the B5023, signposted to Wirksworth, which you should take.

This takes you out of Duffield into the country, and just over a mile after you leave Duffield, you come to the Puss in Boots (set back from the road on the left), with a right turn opposite it signposted to Hazelwood. Take the right turn.

You go immediately over a small bridge, and then a larger one. On the left are three or four houses together, which you ignore. We are about 100 yards further on.

As you come round a gentle right hand bend, there on the left are the "Knowle Farm" and "Duck Pond View" signs in green, and the entrance is just past the signs. The house is set back from the road with a gravel drive - and there is an old street light by the gate.
